What is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient healing art that has been around for at least 2,000 years. Reiki was recently rediscovered in the mid-1800s by Dr. Mikao Usui during his quest to find the healing techniques of the great teachers. At this present time, when western medicine continues to explore alternative methods of healing, Reiki is becoming more and more popular as an accepted and valued practice.
The word "reiki" is derived from the Japanese words "rei" and "ki". "Rei" means spirit or soul. This is the knowledge that comes from the universe, the God energy, the higher self, and that which is all knowing. "Ki" means life force. This is the energy which animates all living things—the primary energy of life and productive source of power that keeps us alive. It is the spiritual consciousness called rei that guides the ki.
We are all born with the universal life energy. However, as we go through life, we become less open and the flow becomes less pure and free. Reiki is not a religion and does not conflict with any religious or meditative practices. It will only enrich and strengthen their universality.
How does Reiki work?
Since Reiki is an energy that is derived from the universe, it has an intelligence of its own and knows where to go. The practitioner, through a series of hand placements upon or a few inches above the body of the client, transfers this energy. It is important to note that Reiki energy does not come from the practitioner but flows through his hands.
Reiki energy treats the person as a whole. The healer's hands may be on the head where the pain is, but the source of the pain may be coming from elsewhere in the body. The energy will go to all placed or sources of pain. The Reiki energy facilitates the healing process by assisting in the removal of blockages and negative energy. It also supports any medical treatments.
Reiki brings the body and mind into an even balance and works on all levels: the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. This positive, loving form of healing energy can never be used to cause harm. It is valid for use on anyone, young or old. It has also been known to have a great effect on pets and plants. Reiki is not only helpful to those who are currently experiencing disease, but as an everyday boost to help one stay balanced and healthy.
What is the Reiki treatment?
The Reiki treatment is gentle and noninvasive. There is no need to disrobe nor to be touched by the practitioner, if you would rather not be. The practitioner places his/her hands upon or over the recipient. The energy is then channeled through the practitioner and into the recipient's body. Reactions to treatment vary. Reiki sessions are personal and affect each person in a different way. Some recipients report sensations of warmth, well-being, and love while receiving the Reiki energy. Others report no immediate sensations at all but notice changes later in the day or even several days later. After a treatment a recipient is asked to drink a lot of water to help the body in cleansing process.
Who can do Reiki?
Anyone can! One does not need to have super powers to extraordinary gifts; one just has to desire to do Reiki. To become a practitioner, one progresses through a series of steps called attunements whereby the Reiki channels are opened within by a Reiki master teacher. These steps clear obstructions and open the body's energy channels, connecting to the source of universal energy. After the attunement, the student undergoes a 21-day cleanse. Due to the raised vibratory rate, old, dense, and negative energy surfaces and is released. Each degree of attunement increases the power and ability of the practitioner.
